The National Trust

We're a charity that looks after special places – for ever, for everyone. We look after historic houses, gardens, mills, coastline, forests, farmland, moorland, islands, castles, nature reserves, villages, pubs and even a goldmine. And we’re as much about people as the places in our care. But we do so much more too. We run a vast retail chain and a 151-strong outlet catering business. And because most of the work we do is affected by wider global issues, our interests extend far beyond just bricks, mortar and land in our care. We speak up on big issues affecting the coast, countryside and heritage. And all the while we’re welcoming around 19 million visitors a year. It’s a quite a task.

Our places are open to all and we thrive by involving as many people as possible in what we do. That’s really important to us. Whether it’s an incredible retail experience or a mouth-watering plate of food, whether we’re sharing our conservation stories or bringing history to life for a group of school children, we want to involve and inspire as many people as possible. We want to bring the past to life, so we put on events to celebrate our history and we take people on guided walks across our estates so they can find out more about wildlife. We want you to breathe in the fresh air, explore our countryside and get out there and have an adventure. And we want you to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. So we’re joined by guest speakers and organise garden events like seed planting days and propagation workshops, and we hold performances of open-air Shakespeare, put on firework displays, manage jazz dinners and get involved with music festivals, too.
